Articles

DHC's two-lesson mini course called Articles addresses an aspect of English usage that gives many native Japanese speakers trouble. Deciding whether to use a, an or the (or no article at all) before a given noun is a difficult skill for non-native English speakers to master. Lesson 1 of Articles addresses Non-Specific Reference and related issues, such as whether a noun is uncountable or countable, singular or plural, and concrete or abstract. Lesson 2 covers the various types of Specific Reference, including Direct and Indirect Prior Reference, Logical Uniquenss, Common Knowledge, Situational Knowledge, and Immediate Specification.
